JPMorganChase has unveiled new global headquarters at 270 Park Avenue, in the heart of New York City. The project includes a modern structure, using the latest in building technology and is NYC’s largest all-electric tower 100% powered by renewable energy. E-J Electric, the largest commercial electrical contractor in NYC, led the electrical design and installation of the project.

Challenge

This project came with some complexities, including space constraints in the underground installation. The project site spanned several dense blocks close to Grand Central Station, where active trains were running. Existing cable lines could not be disrupted. Beneath ground, temperatures varied greatly, so contractors had to deal with compression and expansion due to heat and cold. In addition, underground tunnel spacing was limited, so any new conduit design would have to conform to the design and work within the tight spaces. Plus, the new conduit systems must integrate into an existing 4 x 6 supporting cell rack system.

Solution

Champion Fiberglass®, along with assistance from their NYC based manufacturer’s rep, Gumersell-Cashdan, proposed a clever engineering solution for the unique design requirements. Champion Fiberglass constructed a split duct to slide and move in response to a range of temperatures. To protect and support new and existing cables, the solution included:

• A fiberglass conduit system terminated with sling nets to avoid expansion issues and withstand extreme temperatures
• 4” Heavy wall split ducts, with custom gaskets for sufficient support and strength
• Design of highly specialized, corrosion-resistant stainless steel hangers and hardware
• Fiberglass material that won’t release toxic halogens
• Lightweight conduit solution designed to handle temperature swings and support faster installation

Results

The contractor leveraged the expertise of Gumersell-Cashdan to solve project challenges and source materials for the underground cable and electrical lines for the building. A project of this scale demands clear and effective communication. From the start, the Champion Fiberglass team got involved in all design discussions, responding quickly to project requests. Champion Duct® was delivered ahead of the contractor’s schedule, keeping the project on track. Installation costs were significantly lowered due to the conduit’s light weight, ease of portability, and faster installation rates per NECA. Also, labor progressed much faster without the need for mechanical bends.
