Expandable Utility Risers™ (Patent Pending)

Champion’s new XUR solution is an expandable riser requiring no cutting or gluing, easing the installation of ground electrical cable to panel and meter boxes. Like other Champion Fiberglass® products, Champion XUR is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and offers a low coefficient of friction during installation.

The new expandable utility riser withstands extreme temperature changes, protecting against expansion and contraction from high variations, and creating a safe installation environment.

installation Step

Champion Expandable Utility Risers™ remove the two slowest steps in riser installation: cutting and gluing. Each riser adjusts to height in place, so crews complete underground-to-overhead electrical transitions without field cutting, without adhesive cure windows, and without the rework that follows a mis-cut riser.

The patent-pending design also absorbs expansion and contraction from temperature swings, ground settling and freeze-thaw cycles, and is operable from -40°F to +230°F, so the joint is not stressed as the ground moves around it. Risers are UL 2515 listed for above ground use, impact resistant and UV resistant, and can be made and shipped with customer-specific transitions including PVC couplers, PVC stubs, and fiberglass or PVC male and female adapters. The design was recognised with a 2025 NECA Show Stoppers award and Consulting-Specifying Engineer Product of the Year.

Fiberglass risers cut installation time in two ways
The material is light enough for a single installer to position without equipment, and risers arrive prefabricated in one piece, so the underground-to-overhead transition does not require the cutting and threading that metallic risers do. Risers can be made and shipped with customer-specific transitions, including end bells, PVC couplers, PVC stubs, and fiberglass or PVC male and female adapters, which removes field fabrication from the critical path. A coefficient of friction of 0.38, against 0.90 for PVC Schedule 40 and 80, means the cable pull into the panel, cabinet or meter box goes faster and without the risk of burn-through.
