The 1300 ft. long Hermosa Beach Pier in LA County utilized the full Champion Fiberglass®
product line of electrical conduit, strut, straps, nuts and bolts when upgrading lighting to
be dark sky compliant.

CHALLENGE

As with many projects in coastal regions, challenges included environmental corrosion
due to salt spray and sunlight. Other requirements included weight restrictions to
limit dead load added to the pier. And finally, installation over sand and water proved
demanding.

SOLUTION

Project engineers recommended fiberglass conduit to replace the aging PVC-coated
steel and GRC along the pier as well as to address important project challenges like
corrosion, weight restrictions and installation.

Thanks to epoxy resin strength, fiberglass conduit does not degrade from UV rays or
saltwater, offering excellent corrosion resistance. Plus, it is lightweight. If GRC had
been used on this project, the weight would have been nearly 10 times the weight of
fiberglass.

Champion Fiberglass also provided special customizations including custom offsets to
navigate around bump outs and electrical boxes along the pier.
As for installation, Champion StrutTM CS-S Series and strut fastening system straps
provided corrosion-resistant, stable support along the pier. This combination allowed for
complete engagement and maximum pull-out strength of the channel accessories.

Finally, lightweight Champion Fiberglass conduit and strut streamlined the installation
process resulting in cost savings.

RESULTS

Strong, durable Champion Fiberglass electrical conduit and the Champion Strut system
facilitated a seamless, stable installation over sand and water for the contractor. Time
and money were saved not only on a speedy installation but on materials. Further, these
corrosion-resistant products offer durability for an extended lifespan along the pier.
