Jönköping Spartans take on the Stockholm Mean Machines in their first away match of the season.

Saturday, April 29, dawned cool and cloudy. As the Spartans traveled to Stockholm to face the Mean Machines on their home field, they knew they had a challenge ahead of them – one they intended to relish. The Mean Machines are a strong team, even more so since the recruitment of former champion QB Martina Karlsson and Julia Olsson, who played with the team in their Supreme Court last year.

But the Spartans were also looking lean and mean. Although some injuries kept back a few of the Spartans’ key players, the entire team was looking forward to putting the tactics and strength they’ve been picking up in practice into use on the field. Coach HC Fredrik Bengtsson wasn’t worried. This year’s team features a diverse array of strengths. “This is a bunch of warriors,” he said. “We are all well prepared for the match and the girls will not give an inch tomorrow. We play for each other.”

The Mean Machines brought both strong offensive and defensive approaches to the match. During the two hour and twenty minute game, they scored point after point, earning 18 by halftime and 32 by the match’s end. But, as Coach Bengtsson said, the Spartans are there for each other first—and for points second. The season is just getting started, and as the Spartans work together more as a team, we’re sure to see their scores increase. Winning is great – but having a team you can count on is even better.
