She’s an accountant, a bowling MVP, a dog lover and has worked in the hotel industry for many years. Meet Controller Marissa Sarangaya, who oversees financial accounting for Champion Fiberglass.

Tell us about your role at Champion Fiberglass.

I have been the Controller since October 2007. In my role, I oversee the overall financial accounting for the company, making sure we are within the standard of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Tell us about your background.

I graduated June 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Accounting) degree from the University of the East-Philippines. I was only 20 years old when I passed the CPA Board Examination in 1981, but I was not able to get my CPA certificate until I turned 21.

Before joining Champion Fiberglass, I worked for 26 years for The Peninsula Manila Hotel (part of the Peninsula Hotel chain) as an accounts receivable supervisor and accounts payable supervisor.

Please comment on the electrical conduit market and the role of Champion Fiberglass in it.

Champion Fiberglass is the leader in the electrical fiberglass conduit industry. We are committed to service through quality and innovative solutions.

What do you enjoy about working at Champion Fiberglass? Can you say something about the company mission, values, and culture?

Champion Fiberglass is a great place to work. You get to work with amazing people. Teamwork is the key to why we are number one in the industry. It is a place where I am able to explore my knowledge in all aspects of accounting.

How do you spend your time when not working?

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and being a grandma to my first grandchild. My hobbies include DIY projects and painting. I also enjoy playing and walking my dogs. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I would occasionally go to the Harris County animal shelter on Saturdays to pet and play with the dogs.

Tell us something people might not know about you.

I am a rescue mom. I have a cocker spaniel and a pointer that I rescued from euthanasia, a Chihuahua I found in the middle of the street and a Pomeranian that a family did not want to care for anymore. I am also a bowler. I became the 2007 Female MVP for the Inter-Hotel Bowling Tournament in the Philippines after over a decade of competing.

When I retire, my plan is to have acres of land in order to rescue dogs. I’ve also entertained having an RV or camper so that I can road trip to all 50 states with my dogs.
